It seems that people talk about the subject of abortion rather freely. Even though a voluntary abortion is a medical procedure, with a whole pile of possible side effects, many people seem to discuss it rather casually.
Does it seem odd, to anyone else, that a discussion of an elective surgery can be handled more seriously than the current news on legislation regarding abortion? Think about it–not only is this a medical procedure with all kinds of terrible consequences possible for the mother, but it ends a life…a little one, granted, but still a life. And yet, the general public (or the loudest of the public, anyway) seems to be more concerned about whales and manatees than about unborn babies and uneducated mothers.
There are, though, a number of pregnancy centers less soap-box opinionated than I am. Their main goal is to be sure that the number of uneducated mothers (and fathers, for that matter) shrinks. Besides offering free pregnancy tests in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, centers like Assurance Care focus on abortion education in Lexington, Kentucky. Even on their website, they take the time to be sure any mother considering abortion knows what, exactly, she’s getting herself into. Not a bad thing for her family to know, either…especially any family member who is encouraging her in that direction.
Assurance Care isn’t the only center taking time to educate people. There’s another center, called Choices, that offers the same kind of abortion education in Mt. Shasta, California. Not only do they cover the surgical operations, but they also discuss the pills used after conception–the Morning After Pill (Plan B) and the RU486/Abortion Pill. They explain, with text from the manufacturer, in at least on case, what the pills are and how they work, as well as things to keep in mind when considering these two options.
These two clinics, just representative of many like them, all across the United States, are taking the time to explain to expectant parents just what is involved in the options that other people may just present to them. Abortion is not the only option, but they explain, in detail, what choices have to be made regarding voluntary abortion and what each choice entails, from the procedure to the after-effects, to the possible side effects, which can range from slightly annoying to life-threatening. These folks promise to not judge anyone–their purpose is to educate, across the board, and their website does a great job in starting the education process, with thorough, detailed information.
These folks, and many others like them, also offer various services and support groups to help those who choose to work through the pregnancy to either offer the baby for adoption or take care of him or her themselves. From the sounds of it, the people who work at these centers are much more patient than I am, and I have a great deal of respect for them, for that. They offer abortion education and help to find abortion alternatives, and they go about it in a caring and respectful way.
